Macula Degeneration

Information for Macular Degeneration treatment with Lucentis - 2011
 

With no treatment most eyes with “wet” macular degeneration lose central vision – GO BLIND.
 

Benefits

Injections of Lucentis into the eye will

 

• Stop vision deteriorating more than 2 lines in 95% of patients
• 5% or 1 in 20 still do poorly
• 70% hold vision at level when starting
• 30% vision IMPROVES

BUT average eye needs 6 – 8 injections over 12 months.

 

Risks

1.  Lucentis is safe.  There are virtually no systemic side effects from   Lucentis injections into the eye.    

2. Risk with Needle Injection are uncommon;

• Severe infection in eye.  1 in 1000 with each injection (i.e. 10 injections overall 1 in 100) could cause blindness and is very serious
• Lens damage – cataract if needle touches lens.  Cataract surgery may be needed
• Retinal tear
